We were also proud to have two guest speakers come and give conferences on the topic of International Business:Pictures-2010 6118 chinese writing

“When Cultures Collide” by Richard D. Lewis

How do the Americans, the Chinese, the Finns and the Italians do business?  This seminar went over the concept that in order to do business with other cultures, one must understand and adapt to their way of working, and that it is not just a question of understanding their language. The American Business School students are prepared to these working methods, as their daily challenge in the school is working with group members from over 80 different nationalities and therefore cultures.

“Working Abroad” by Jean-Olivier Meyer

More and more young professionals are looking to live the expat experience. But what are the real opportunities, and what are the traps one can fall into? The American Business School degree is recognized world-wide and allows students to work across all continents.

A Study Abroad fair was held on the campus, where representatives from X partner schools came to answer questions from our students interested in our exchange program.
This first edition of the International week on campus was a great success!

Interview with Julien Samaha, Class of 2003
"The American Business School was the only school I knew where I could sit in a classroom with 15 or 20 different nationalities"

Why did you join the American Business School?

"I knew I was going to work in a global environment, where a Bachelor of Business Administration would have more impact on international employers than a "French business school degree". The American Business School was the only school I knew where I could sit in a classroom with 15 or 20 different nationalities and exchange with people with different backgrounds, ways of thinking, expectations…. and that taught me what cultural differences mean."

I believe you started doing business when you were still at school, could you tell us a little more about your company?

"I started my own business in March 2002, and graduated in June 2003. During spring of 2002, I did the Intercultural Management Semester that brought us around the world to discover cultural differences. I was going to travel to China among other places, and I decided that I had to find a potential customer before leaving. Two months later I opened a company

in Hong Kong, and immediately started doing international trade. As a result, I could go to classes during the day and turn the knowledge I was acquiring into practice at night. I could see that everything I had been taught was very useful."

You have been out in the business world some time now. What do you think makes an American Business School graduate different from the graduates of other business schools in France?

"American Business School alumni are open-minded, aware and respectful of cultural difference, and can easily go and mix with local people. Feeling comfortable with local people makes a huge difference in doing business, as it is the only way to create good opportunities. I can see the difference between the average French person in China who lives in the expatriate community and the American Business School graduates in China who tend to integrate much more with the Chinese, which obviously allows them to be more successful."

For our second alumni event which took place on February 4th, the American Business School organized a conference entitled:

Working abroad during the crisis: tempting, risky, possible?

This was an opportunity for alumni and students interested in working abroad to get advice and opinions from a specialist in international human resources.
In the current economical and social climate in France, one can justifiably imagine searching for a position in positive growth countries or regions. It is both a professional and personal challenge, and the following points must be taken into consideration:

1/ International Positions: country orientation, required skills, how to search and find?

The average time of expatriation is 2 to 9 years. The key positions abroad are in Finance and Insurance industries, Green business, e business, Low cost, R&D and IT.
The main geographical areas concerned are Asia, Canada, the USA, Mexico, Brazil, Middle East and Europe.

2/ Optimizing an international Application: employed/unemployed, which methods & networks to be used?

70 % of offers are not published so the best advice is to be visible and pro active via headhunters and recruitment specialists in France, social network (Linked in, Viadeo, Facebook), job boards, Chamber of Commerce and international press.

3/ Companies: what should be negotiated?

International employment contracts do not exist ,so there are many point that should be verified from a legal status (expatriation, detachment, and transfer), salary (how much a position is normally paid and rewarded, retirement pension, taxes and package).
