For our second alumni event which took place on February 4th, the American Business School organized a conference
entitled:
Working abroad during the crisis: tempting, risky, possible?
This was an opportunity for alumni and students interested in working abroad to get advice and opinions from a specialist
in international human resources.
In the current economical and social climate in France, one can justifiably imagine searching for a position in positive growth countries or regions. It is both a professional and personal
challenge, and the following points must be taken into consideration:
1/ International Positions: country orientation, required skills, how to search and find?
The average time of expatriation is 2 to 9 years. The key positions abroad are in Finance and Insurance industries, Green business, e business, Low cost, R&D and IT.
The main geographical areas concerned are Asia, Canada, the USA, Mexico, Brazil, Middle East and Europe.
2/ Optimizing an international Application: employed/unemployed, which methods & networks to be used?
70 % of offers are not published so the best advice is to be visible and pro active via headhunters and recruitment specialists in France, social network (Linked in, Viadeo, Facebook), job
boards, Chamber of Commerce and international press.
3/ Companies: what should be negotiated?
International employment contracts do not exist ,so there are many point that should be verified from a legal status (expatriation, detachment, and transfer), salary (how much a position is
normally paid and rewarded, retirement pension, taxes and package).
Our Guest Speaker, Jacques-Olivier MEYER, manages INTELFI, an international Human Resources consulting firm, which he founded in 2005 and employs 7 people. He works with
Executives and Managers, negotiating and optimizing their employment contracts, salary, mobility packages including healthcare and tax issues, and when necessary, severance packages. For
companies, he develops international career management policies which are both motivating for the employees and conducive to the current economic crisis.
J.-O. MEYER gives conferences in many French business schools and teaches international HR at Celsa-Sorbonne. He previously worked as an international HR Director in worldwide pharmaceuticals and
utility groups. He graduated from the Masters Program at HEC Paris in 1989 and has a Masters in Finance from Université Paris 2 (1988) and a Masters in International Economy from Université
Panthéon-Sorbonne (1987).
